I’ll give all my furious affection

The Gloaming (Martin HayesIarla O'Lionaird , Caomhin O'Raghallaigh, Dennis Cahill and New York pianist/producer Thomas Bartlett aka Doveman) have been getting a torrent of rave, and much deserved, reviews lately, post their self titled album release, their Saturday Night Show appearance and their gig in the NCH (which i had the pleasure to attend).

I'm not going to get in to reviewing the album or the NCH gig, which was incredible, but one of the big tracks songs from the album is Freedom, or Saoirse in Irish; a song based on the famous poem Saoirse by Seán O Riordáin. It, like all songs on the album, is in Irish and while I knew knew of the poem i had to back and read it again. So for you who are in a similar boat here's the poem in full in Irish with translation (translated by Greg Delanty, Poetry Ireland Review, Issue 84 via in English below.

Raghaidh mé síos i measc na ndaoine
De shiúl mo chos
Is raghaidh mé. síos anocht

Ó fanfad libh de ló is d’oiche,
Is beidh mé íseal,
Is beidh mé dílis,
D’bhur snabsmaointe.

Mar do chuala iad ag fás im intinn,
Ag fás gan chuimse,
Gan mheasarthacht.

Is do thugas gean mo chroí go fíochmhar
Don rud tá srianta,
Don gach macrud:

Don smacht, don reacht, don teampall daoineach,
Don bhfocal bocht coitianta
Don am fé leith:

Don ab, don chlog, don seirbhiseach
Don chomparáid fhaitíosach,
Don bheaguchtach:

Don luch, don tomhas, don dreancaid bhideach,
Don chaibidil, don líne
Don aibítir:

Don mhórgacht imeachta is tíochta,
Don chearrbhachas istoíche,
Don bheannachtain:

Don bhfeirmeoir ag tomhas na gaoithe
Sa bhfómhar is é ag cuirnhneamh
Ar pháirc eornan:

Don chomhthuiscint, don chomh-sheanchuimhne,
Do chomhiompar comhdhaoine,
Don chomh-mhacrud

Is bheirim fuath anois is choíche
Do imeachtaí na saoirse,
Don neamhspleáchas.

Is atuirseach an intinn
A thit in iomar doimhin na saoirse,
Ní mhaireann cnoc dar chruthaigh Dia ann,
Ach cnoic theibi, sainchnoic shamhlaíochta.
Is bíonn gach cnoc díobh lán de mhianta
Ag dreapadóireacht gan chomhlíonadh,
Nil teora leis an saoirse
Ná le cnoca na samhlaíochta,
Ná níl teora leis na mianta,
Ná faoiseamh
Le fail.

I'll go out and mingle with people.
I'll head down on my own two feet.
I'll walk down tonight.

I'll go down looking for Confinedom,
counteract the rabid freedom
coursing here.

I'll fetter the pack of snarling thoughts
hounding me
in my aloneness.

I'll look for a regular chapel
chock-a-block with people
at a set time.

I'll seek the company of folk
who never practise freedom,
nor aloneness,

and listen to pennythoughts
like something coined.

I'll bear affection for people
without anything original
in their stockthoughts.

I'll stay with them day and night.
I'll be humble
and loyal to their snuffed minds

since I heard them
rising in my mind
without control.

I'll give all my furious affection
to everything that binds them
to every stockthing:

to control, to contracts, to the communal temple,
to the poor common word,
to the concise time,

to the cowl, to the cockerel, to the cook,
to the weak comparison,
to the coward,

to the cosy mouse, to the cost, to the covert flea,
to the code, to the codex,
to the codicil,

to the cocky coming and going,
to the costly night gambling,
to the conferred blessing,

to the concerned farmer testing
the wind, contemplating
a field of corn,
to co-understanding, to co-memory,
to the co-behaviour of co-people,
to the co-stockthing.

And I condemn now and forever
the goings-on of freedom,

The mind is finished
that falls into the abyss of freedom.
There's no hills made by god there,
only abstract hills — specifically of the imagination.
Every hill crawls with desires
that climb without ever reaching fulfilment.
There's no limit to freedom
on Mount Fancy,
nor is there limit to desire,
nor any relief
to be found.

Really cute idea from Tokyo Sunshine Aquarium using AR Penguins to show people the way to their aquarium.

Post ‘SUAPTH’ Party @ Lighthouse Cinema

Left my phone down, forgot it was filming, and this is what it captured. While the after party and general atmosphere in the Lighthouse Cinema was pretty good, for the SUAPTH screening, we had a less than ideal experience.

Not only was the entire movie in screen 2 B&W (while all other screens enjoyed the joys of a full colour experience) the sound was so out of sync that people, including us, got up and left!

We chanced our arm and went in to another screen to watch the end of the movie but damage was done at that stage.

The Lighthouse kindly offered us complimentary tickets which did soften me out a the after-party was good i really do like the Lighthouse as a Cinema/Venue so...

Cór Cúil Aodha – Temple Bar Trad Fest (2012) – #1

Cór Cúil Aodha played a gig last Saturday @ Dublin City Hall as part of Temple Bar Trad Fest. I managed to setup the GoPro in two different positions for the first and second half of the concert. The files being huge and the GoPro not being built for sound, means that the ultimate version that you see above isn't great sound or picture quality wise. But it should give you a good idea of how the concert went. The gig itself was 2 hours long soonce i have the rest cut together ill upload.

"On April 2nd 2011, LCD Soundsystem played its final show at Madison Square Garden. LCD frontman James Murphy had made the conscious decision to disband one of the most celebrated and influential bands of its generation at the peak of its popularity, ensuring that the band would go out on top with the biggest and most ambitious concert of its career. The instantly sold out, near four-hour extravaganza did just that, moving the thousands in attendance to tears of joy and grief, with NEW YORK magazine calling the event "a marvel of pure craft" and TIME magazine lamenting "we may never dance again."  SHUT UP AND PLAY THE HITS is both a narrative film documenting this once in a life time performance and an intimate portrait of James Murphy as he navigates the lead-up to the show, the day after, and the personal and professional ramifications of his decision."

3-Rock in 3.5mins

Quick mtb blast around the upper and lower 3-rock trails in the Dublin mountains. Had to x1.5/x2.0 footage in parts to show most of the trail in 3.5 mins. Shot with Go Pro Hero HD.

So according to Triodos Bank Happiness is up and Greed down...that is if you go with them i presume.

HD GoPro Side Mounting

Having a go at side mounting the HD GoPro Hero to my MTB helmet. Using the adhesive pads provided which will hopefully hold given the vibration and general battering its likely to get. To date have been using the head strap to mount to top of helmet but like the side mounted view. Anywhoo, hope to get up to 3Rock some evening this week to give it its first spin out.
