2012 Irish Social Media Awards

Last Monday the 13th of Feb saw various cities around the world launch and celebrate social media week. While there wasn't any official event here in Dublin there was a bit of a bash thrown to launch the 2012 Irish Social Media Awards. A 2011 winners case study paper was also launched on the night and has since been uploaded to slideshare.

The event itself was in the form of a digital table quiz where the use of smartphones was encouraged and even necessary for a lot of the rounds.

I was delighted to have had a chance to pitch in when pulling the case study paper and the launch night together. The awards themselves are a @damienmulley driven production and are taking place on May 17th in Dublin's Mansion House.

Cór Cúil Aodha – Temple Bar Trad Fest (2012) – #1

Cór Cúil Aodha played a gig last Saturday @ Dublin City Hall as part of Temple Bar Trad Fest. I managed to setup the GoPro in two different positions for the first and second half of the concert. The files being huge and the GoPro not being built for sound, means that the ultimate version that you see above isn't great sound or picture quality wise. But it should give you a good idea of how the concert went. The gig itself was 2 hours long soonce i have the rest cut together ill upload.

"On April 2nd 2011, LCD Soundsystem played its final show at Madison Square Garden. LCD frontman James Murphy had made the conscious decision to disband one of the most celebrated and influential bands of its generation at the peak of its popularity, ensuring that the band would go out on top with the biggest and most ambitious concert of its career. The instantly sold out, near four-hour extravaganza did just that, moving the thousands in attendance to tears of joy and grief, with NEW YORK magazine calling the event "a marvel of pure craft" and TIME magazine lamenting "we may never dance again."  SHUT UP AND PLAY THE HITS is both a narrative film documenting this once in a life time performance and an intimate portrait of James Murphy as he navigates the lead-up to the show, the day after, and the personal and professional ramifications of his decision."

3-Rock in 3.5mins

Quick mtb blast around the upper and lower 3-rock trails in the Dublin mountains. Had to x1.5/x2.0 footage in parts to show most of the trail in 3.5 mins. Shot with Go Pro Hero HD.

Orb Invasion!

Well not exactly.

The baby brother aka @BirinBeo, who's off gallivanting around South America at the moment, put together a series (set 1, set 2, set 3) of long exposure photographs which i think are pretty awesome. He's already sold a few prints and has had some gallery interest so if you like what you see drop him a line over on

Munster v Northampton (November 2011)

Was lucky enough to be in Thomond Park on Saturday for ANOTHER unforgettable Heineken Cup night. I brought my my brothers GoPro along to capture some of the build up etc and while i'm usually too engrossed during the game to get any footage of the match itself I did manage to capture the moment when Ronan O'Gara's injury-time drop-goal, on the back of a 41-phase move, won the match for Munster and put the crowd into a frenzy!

Its a bit long and some of the cuts are dodgy but it kinda says it all. Track is Raconte-moi une histoire by M83.

Final Score:

The 41 phases from start to finish with typically unbiased sky sports commentary!

Social Media At A Glance

The idea of polite or incidental media is something i find pretty interesting. Got turned on to DEXTR after reading this blog post by Russell Davies and have been playing around with since. Love the interface and its handy to have on the desk or second screen for at a glance updates from my Twitter stream.

A similar webapp i came across, Arrivals by Dan W. Williams, brings the same at a glance experience to Foursquare. Arrivals turns your Foursquare notifications in to a airport arrivals board...hence the name.

And finally, though I'd mention Glowdart which is similar to TwitterFall but also allows you to turn on and off news feeds who's headlines appear mixed in with your Twitter and Facebook streams....again allows you to keep up to date with news as well as your social circle at a glance.
